When it comes to the iconic cleans of songs like "Slow Dancing In A Burning Room" or the more gritty and spanky tones from the Texas Blues greats, much of what we hear comes from a rare amplifier (Steel String Singer) designed and manufactured by a small California-based builder whose amps now fetch upwards of a quarter of a million dollars. To the 68 custom princeton(which was better, but still not really what I wanted). I basically downgraded in terms of price from a Mini Rectifier+ 1x12 Mini Rec Slant Cab (the mini rec preamp gain sounded fizzy in comparison to this) can't say this for other fender amps, or actually most other amps in general. Actually you wouldn't even need a drive pedal with this amp cause the preamp gain on it is actually pretty good, even at low volumes. My drive pedals sound even better through it as well. Some very Fendery blackface-ish cleans can be found by setting the bright switch on, gain low, medium/low settings with treble set higher than usual. Cleans can be brighter or warmer than the 68 princeton, there is a bright switch and the treble/mid/bass knobs make huge changes in tone. Superior volume taper, especially on the low/medium setting.
I used the money from the sale to buy a bassbreaker 15 which i received today, which is a superior amp in almost every way (it's just 6 pounds heavier, but it does have a 12 inch speaker vs a 10) The volume taper also annoyed me, it went from whisper quiet at 1 to full on volume at 2. I had a Princeton '68 Custom that I got after returning a Mini Rectifier Head, but I didn't like how the treble and bass knobs didn't really make much difference to the tone, and the clean was a little too warm for my liking. So I actually had trouble finding a tube amp that I liked better than the cheapo Mustang II hiding there.
